Tiny Abolitionist Film Festival at Bantam Cinema for Black History Month Programming

Two short films and two short performances about abolition, exploring Connecticut’s role in the struggle toward equality.

We are pleased to announce that The John Brown Project, Culture 4 A Cause, and Our Culture is Beautiful will be back at the Bantam Cinema & Arts Center during 2024’s Black History Month programming.

This year, we will be joined by the Berlin Equity Action Team, who also produced a short documentary about Connecticut abolition heroes. Connecticut’s 29th Colored Infantry marched from South Carolina to Virginia to do battle, win, and hold the high ground.

We will screen two short documentary films celebrating Connecticut abolition heroes. The evening will also include a Harriet Tubman interpretation, African drumming, speakers, and a Q&A discussion with the film producers.

The films explore abolition, equality, music, and American history

  • The 29th Connecticut chronicles the story of Connecticut's 29th Black Infantry, who fought in the Civil War and was a catalyst for securing victory for the Union Army. This Documentary Short recently won “Best Connecticut Film” at the 2023 Mystic Film Festival.

  • His Truth Is Marching On is a film about American music from 1619 to hip hop as told through the Civil War song “John Brown's Body—a song which celebrated NWCT’S John Brown.” The film won a 2023 Award of Merit from the CT League of History Organizations.

Both movies celebrate Connecticut heroes in the struggle for equality in the United States. John Brown’s passion for equality was the inspiration for recording the John Brown song with CT musicians. The 29th Connecticut Colored Infantry’s passion for equality inspired the Berlin Equity Action Team to dig into local history and tell the stories.
